In class Sunday morning at Highway, Devin talked about the interview that Lester Holt did with Joe Beam on The Weekend Today Show. He said that Lester threw Joe a “hanging curve ball” that could have been hit to the fence. My guess is that Lester intended for Joe to hit a home run with his question. Lester Holt is a Christian who attends the Manhattan Church of Christ in NYC. It is encouraging to see faithful Christians in high profile jobs like a TV news anchor. The Christian Chronicle did an article on Lester Holt in May of 2005. You can read the full article at this website.
I hope that when I am thrown a “hanging curve ball”, I will hit it over the fence. Far too many times, I am concerned about ruffling feathers or appearing like a stick-in-the-mud. I want to express my faith boldly and courageously. (No indictment on Joe. I’m sure he did what he thought was right and appropriate for the setting. I don’t know what it would be like to be sitting in that seat!)
In I Peter 3:15 we are commanded, “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,”
The “be prepared” part is a challenge for me. Sometimes I can go overboard in the “gentleness and respect” area. I’m more sensitive than I am prepared. I want to be prepared to give an answer. It seems to me that a prerequisite for having an answer is to be certain that Christ is “set apart as Lord” in my heart.
Do you have an answer for the hope in you?
