David begins this Psalm by talking about the people who are against him and want to see him fail. These people show disdain for his faith in God. But David will not give up on his belief in God’s care and protection over him.
My favorite lines from Psalm 3:
Many are saying of me, “God will not deliver him.”
Can’t you feel that? Today there are many who say that God is not real and he will not and cannot help us.
But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
I can just picture the Lord with his hand under my chin, gently lifting my head so that I can see him. I can see where my help comes from.
I call out to the Lord and he answers me from his holy mountain.
Our Lord will answer us when we call out to him.
I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
I can rest and be confident that I will wake again because of him. Not because of my planning and great alarm system. Not because I have big dogs that will keep intruders away. I wake again because of the Lord. Whether in this life or the next, I wake because he sustains me.
I will not fear though tens of thousands assail me on every side.
I have not one thing to fear. Enemies, terrorists can come at me from every direction, I will not fear because it is the Lord who is a shield around me. He sustains me.
From the Lord comes deliverance.
My deliverance will come from the Great Almighty One who lifts my head high.
Here is this beautiful Psalm in its entirety from biblegateway.com:
A psalm of David. When he fled from his son Absalom.
1 Lord, how many are my foes!
How many rise up against me!
2 Many are saying of me,
“God will not deliver him.”[b]
3 But you, Lord, are a shield around me,
my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
4 I call out to the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy mountain.
5 I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
6 I will not fear though tens of thousands
assail me on every side.
7 Arise, Lord!
Deliver me, my God!
Strike all my enemies on the jaw;
break the teeth of the wicked.
8 From the Lord comes deliverance.
May your blessing be on your people.
Have a great day!
